PracticeMy basic perspective is existential. That is, I regard both myself and my clients as involved in a process of creating meaning and making positive decisions in lives filled with uncertainty, paradox and opportunity. I believe in both the inevitability of suffering and the possibility of alleviating it through awareness, insight and concentrated effort. I view my role as assisting in this process by listening well, providing perspective, and teaching skills when appropriate.
The theoretical framework I employ is primarily developmental. I rely on the natural forces of both growth and maturation, and the drive of a system to restore balance and harmony following disruption. In addition, I honor the importance of the essential self, the power of the unconscious dimensions of the self, and the impact of the social dilemmas in which we live. I seek to engage the capacity for change, an inclination toward aliveness and the yearning for creative well-being.My clinical approaches include cognitive/behavioral, insight, family systems and mindfulness perspectives. I focus on constructive problem solving, clarification of values, healthy communication, and acknowledgment of feeling. In my work, I use a gently interactive, collaborative style as a therapist. My intention is to help create a lively dialogue in which we can both challenge patterns that are outdated and encourage the development of personal authority and responsibility. |
